Same thing right? Sometimes it’s quite expensive in the store which is ridiculous because it is SO easy and cheap to make. Here are a few different ways to make it, in the oven or on the stove…

Oven baked Muesli

  • 4 c rolled oats
  • 2 Tbsp honey

You can grill it or bake it so turn the oven grill to medium or to about 120ºC (250ºF). Spread the oats out evenly on a lined baking tray. Drizzle the honey over the oats and pop into the oven and grill/bake for about 3 minutes, pull out the pan and mix the oats around so all sides of the grain get toasted. Then put back in the oven again for another couple minutes. They should be easy to move around as the hot honey won’t really be sticky. Check and irritate the oats every couple of minutes until they have turned just golden (about 10 – 15 minutes). Take the tray out of the oven and let the oats cool. The honey will harden and the oats will cool and become crispy so make sure they don’t stick to the pan.

Once the oats are cool it is time to add your favorite ingredients. You can use almost anything but if you’re stuck for ideas here’s what we suggest. Shredded/flaked coconut, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, nuts (toasted slivered almonds are great), raisins, sultanas, any dried fruits: cranberries, apricots, pawpaw/papaya, banana, pineapple, apple, peach, prunes, dates etc., wheat germ, millet, linseed, buckwheat. The list is huge. Really it’s nice to use just a few of your favorites and we like to add fresh fruit on the day we eat it too.

Granola on the stove

Combine 4 cups of your favorite granola ingredients oatmeal, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, coconut, dates, nuts, whatever you fancy. Pour 1/4 cup of oil (grapeseed or sunflower) into a large skillet or saucepan and mix in the dry ingredients until they’re evenly coated. Then cook the combination on top of the stove, stirring occasionally until all the makings are a golden colour. In about 10 minutes the granola should be ready to sweeten with raw sugar, maple syrup, honey, or molasses.  How much depends on your sweet tooth, but around 2 Tbsp of honey is what we use. Remove the cereal from the stove, let cool and serve with fruit and milk or yoghurt.
