Sunday sweets – Apple pie

We thought we’d cap off the amazing week of pies, with a classic apple pie. It’s actually really easy to make and always super impressive when taken from the oven!

For the pastry use our recipe from a couple days ago (click here) or you can use pre-made pie shells.

  • 6 large Granny Smith apples
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1/2 tsp lemon zest
  • 45g unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves

After following the recipe to make your pie crust (the sweet one), while it’s baking blind you can start your filling.

Peel and core the apples, and cut each into chunks. In a bowl toss with lemon juice right away to prevent the apples from discolouring. Place the butter and sugar in a large frying pan over medium-low heat. When butter has melted, add apples and spices, then stir to coat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until the apples have softened a little. Set aside to cool a little.

When the pie shell is out of the oven fill it with the apple mixture and roll out the rest of the dough to place over top of the pie. (You can cut it into strips and weave a lattice if you want to).

Bake in the preheated (180ºC-350ºF) oven for about 20 minutes- or until golden. Served best with vanilla ice-cream!
