Snack time

Well liquid snack time. Sometimes it’s hard to think of what to eat or make to satisfy a little hunger between meals. Although smoothies seem obvious, they really are an ideal snack, easy to make, healthy, delicious and fast. Here are 2 of our favorite smoothies. One dairy and one without and of course you can substitute many different fruits to include or omit what you like.

Banana and nutmeg smoothie

This combination is so simple but SO good.

serves 1

  • 1 banana
  • 1 c whole milk (or you can use low fat or soy)
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1/2 c vanilla or plain yoghurt (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

All you need to do is blend all the ingredients pour into a tall glass sprinkle with nutmeg and enjoy.

This particular recipe is great for breakfast, you can add a teaspoon of bran or wheat germ or some ground linseeds. Also mango goes great in this or if you’re feeling like a little treat add a shot of cognac. Sometimes on a really hot day this drink is even more refreshing with about 4 ice cubes blended in. Bananas are a superfood- so get that potassium into you!

Berrylicious smoothie

Mum has one of these every day! It’s a great way to eat a bunch of healthy fruits and enjoy a refreshing beverage at the same time. Using frozen berries is great because you can make it any time of the year and the smoothie will be a great thick icy consistency.

serves 2

  • 1/2 c frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 c frozen raspberries
  • 1/2 c frozen strawberries or blackberries
  • 1 c apple juice
  • a few slices of fresh mango, apricot, plum, or fresh berries (optional)

Blend it up! A wonderful dairy free smoothie full of purple goodness, anti-oxidents and vitamins C, B6 and K. It winds up being pretty thick this one, so add a little more apple juice if you want.
